Born Mohammed Zahur Khayyam in Rahon, Punjab, Khayyam’s musical journey began early with his deep connection to classical music. He developed a strong foundation in Hindustani classical music. His professional career started at All India Radio, but his breakthrough came with the film Footpath (1953), though it did not achieve significant commercial success. Despite this, Khayyam’s ability to blend classical ragas with contemporary tunes began to take shape, a feature that would later become a hallmark of his style.
His consistent commitment to creating meaningful, melodious music gradually built his reputation as a composer with a unique and deep musical vision. Khayyam’s big break came in the 1970s with the film Kabhi Kabhie (1976), which became a massive hit. The soundtrack, featuring iconic songs like "Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Me" and "Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hoon," showcased Khayyam’s mastery in creating timeless romantic ballads. The minimalistic orchestration and poetic lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi contributed to its enduring appeal.
Khayyam’s legacy as a composer continued with major successes like Razia Sultan (1983), where his fusion of classical Indian music with contemporary sounds created a regal and dramatic soundtrack. His music for Umrao Jaan (1981), particularly songs like “In Aankhon Ki Masti” and “Dil Cheez Kya Hai,” was celebrated for its classical poetry and ghazals, fitting perfectly with the film’s elegant portrayal of 19th-century Lucknow. Throughout his career, Khayyam collaborated with legendary lyricists like Sahir Ludhianvi, Javed Akhtar, and Shakeel Badayuni, creating some of the most poetic and emotionally powerful songs in Bollywood.
